September is Heal the Bay’s Coastal Cleanup Month with events taking place around Los Angeles County all month long to help clean up the area we live in.
Heal the Bay has announced itโs 32nd Coastal Cleanup Day event will be held on Saturday, September 18 at Santa Monica State Beach, located just north of the Santa Monica Pier and Pacific Park. Heal the Bay is also hosting special Coastal Cleanup Day in-person group cleanups at 25+ coastal, inland, river and underwater sites on this day as well.
Coastal Cleanup Day is an annual event where volunteers come together to pick up trash and debris from Southland beaches. In 2020, Heal the Bay volunteers collected more than 40,101 pieces of trash from neighborhoods, parks, trails and beaches. Coastal Cleanup Day is part of Coastal Cleanup Month, which takes place the whole month of September.
Volunteer ahead of time with this online registration form. All registered Heal the Bay volunteers who sign up for self-guided cleanups this September will receive 15% off the Heal the Bay Shop.
WHAT:
Heal the Bay Coastal Cleanup Day
WHEN:
Saturday, September 18th
9am – noon
WHERE:
Santa Monica State Beach, just north of the Santa Monica Pier
California Coastal Cleanup Day also takes place on September 18th. This is the largest one-day volunteer event in the country, taking place throughout the entire golden state.
If you are not in Santa Monica and want to volunteer to clean up your beach and waterways there are 2 ways you can participate:
CA Coastal Cleanup: 9/18 from 9am-noon
Help remove the trash and plastic pollution at beaches and waterways throughout the state. In 2019, more than 74,000 volunteers (yes! 74,000) picked up more than 900,000 pounds of trash throughout CA. Thatโs 450 tons of trash. To find a cleanup near you click here.
Self-guided neighborhood cleanups
Participate throughout the month by cleaning your neighborhoods, parks and other local areas. Trash from inland areas flows downstream to the coast, so cleaning up neighborhood trash prevents marine debris. Gather cleanup supplies from home, download theย CleanSwell app (to count your trash and to have your trash counted!), and clean on your own time throughout September. More than 14,000 Californians participated in a neighborhood cleanup during September 2020, preventing over 150,000 pounds of trash from entering our stormwater systems and potentially polluting our coast and ocean.
To protect your health and slow the spread of COVID-19, please follow the most recentย COVID-19 guidance from your county. For more information on the coronavirus, please visit the website for theย Center for Disease Control.
However you choose to participate, thank you for keeping our beaches and waterways clean and healthy!
