Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier hosted the 2021 Countdown for Los Angeles and streamed the event on their live-streaming webcams.
Thousands of people joined Pacific Park online through Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Twitch to ring in 2021. The live-streamed countdown took place on the world-famous Pacific Wheel that displayed fun designs from the previous year, a 60-second countdown in brilliant colors, and “Happy New Year” animated in 16 different languages.
Skip ahead to 33 minutes into the video to see the final 60-second countdown which took place at 11:59 PM. The countdown is followed by the words “Happy New Year” in many different languages representing LA’s diverse population an recognizing those from all over the world who joined us in celebrating the new year.
2020 has been a trying time for people all over the world. As one of the last major cities to officially ring in the New Year, Pacific Park continued their tradition of displaying an animated countdown on their Ferris wheel so people all over the greater Los Angeles area and the world could count off the last seconds of such a difficult year. The annual event typically draws thousands of revelers out the sandy beaches surrounding the historic Pier. This year, Angelenos were encouraged to remain home and celebrate the countdown with their neighbors from all over the world. The event, live streamed from the Park’s webcams, was also shared on the Park’s Facebook page were people could comment and chat about their favorite moments from the Pier and hopes for returning to the iconic destination soon.
This special light program on the Pacific Wheel is one of many presentations displayed throughout the year. The Wheel’s state-of-the-art LED lighting system is capable of displaying rich animations and brilliant lights that can be enjoyed from nearly a mile away. Other special programs include a heart-filled Valentine’s Day program to inspire romance, a lucky-green St Patrick’s Day display on March 17th, and brilliant hues of green and blue on Earth Day (the Ferris wheel is partially powered by solar panels located throughout Pacific Park).
There will be one more New Year’s celebration this year on the Pacific Wheel on February 12th when the Park will glow gold and red for the Year of the Bull.
